Phlebotomy prepares individuals to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of invasive procedures. Instruction includes basic vascular anatomy and physiology, blood physiology, skin puncture techniques, venipuncture, venous specimen collection and handling, safety and sanitation procedures, and applicable standards and regulations.
All BRTC degree-seeking students should demonstrate competency in the general education learning outcomes.
This program is ineligible for financial aid.
How many hours is this program?
Upon successful completion of this 12- or 17-credit-hour program, individuals will earn a certificate of proficiency.
What will I learn?
In the phlebotomy programs, students will achieve the following learning goals:
- Students will demonstrate competency in collecting blood samples.
- Students will apply knowledge of venous anatomy.
- Students will illustrate clinical safety.

Phlebotomy Application
Opens: April 1, 9:00 a.m.
Deadline: Open year-round
Classes available in 8 and 16-week sessions.
No incomplete applications will be accepted; all applications must be complete prior to deadline.
Phlebotomy Admission Information
- Applicants must complete all enrollment requirements and submit all documents before the student selection for each class is made.
- A final grade of “C” or higher is required in all core courses.
- Upon completion of the program, graduates take the National Healthcareer Association’s (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam as a third-party assessment and to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

Military Service Obligations
Any student whose plan of study is interrupted due to military service obligations while enrolled in an allied health program will be guaranteed readmission upon return. The student will be required to meet the readmission standards set by the program.

Certificate in Proficiency for Patient Care Technician
Students that complete the Certificate of Proficiency in both Phlebotomy and Nursing Assistant also qualify for a Certificate in Proficiency for Patient Care Tech.
